Two Stories - Two Endings
The team finished the season with two very tough games with two very different results.
The Defenders fell to Ankeny Christian Academy in the championship game of District 11. After falling behind early, the squad fought back to lead the first quarter by one. During the second period, the team lead by six with only two minutes remaining. However, with three successive turnovers, ACA was able to close the gap at the break. The contest see-sawed back and forth throughout the second half until ACA pushed the score out to a twelve point advantage with 6:40 remaining. Minutes later the Defenders faced an insurmountable 22-point deficit. After a late 3-point effort, the final score stood at 57-73.
The Defenders were the underdog in both of these contests; yet, they beat the HOIAC Conference Champion Colo-Nesco squad 43-41. The win advanced the squad to the Championship game.
Though the Defenders will lose two seniors who contributed much to the team, Jon and Wes, they have several underclassmen determined to leave their own mark on the team.
