Grandview Cross Country 2010

Coming into the 2010 season, the Grandview cross country team was full of potential. The team consisted of senior All-State runner Cooper, promising new comer sophomore Boone, and the ever improving junior Samuel. Mr. Fisher, who is also a teacher at Grandview, is the head coach of this year’s cross country team. The assistant coach is Mr. Caples, who is also the assistant coach of Grandview’s junior high football team. Mr. Butch Fisher talked about the guidelines of cross country. Each meet consists of a distance of 3.1 miles and is usually run on a golf course or pre-set trail.

Despite not having a full team, the three runners still performed very well individually. In the team’s first meet at Gilbert, Cooper finished with a time of 19:52, Boone with a 19:59, and Sam with a 22:48, with Cooper and Boone finishing in the top twenty. In the team’s very next meet at Jefferson-Scranton, Sam improved to a time of 21:44. All three of the runners continued to improve their times throughout the season. The team ran their best times, although not their highest finishes, at the West Marshall meet. Cooper finished seventh with a time of 18:20, Boone finished eighth with a time of 18:25, and Sam finished with a personal best of 19:30. The team achieved their highest finishes at the Heart of Iowa Conference meet. Boone finished first with a time of 18:34, Cooper fourth with a time of 18:39, and Sam seventeenth with a time of 20:11. When Mr. Fisher was asked about the team’s great finishes, he replied, “I was so proud of everyone. I was not expecting us to finish so well, especially since not all the runners at the meet were from small schools.” The team also performed well in their class 1A district meet, with Cooper finishing eighteenth, Boone twenty-third, and Sam fiftieth out of well over a hundred runners.

This year’s cross country season was one of the best Grandview has ever had and the future looks bright for the sport. When Mr. Fisher was asked what he wanted to see out of his cross country team, he replied, “While I am very happy that three people came out this year, I would love to see more people come out for the sport in the future. I want to prove that cross country is actually a fun sport, and maybe even build a program out of it.”
